Calamari and shrimp from plants: The vegan alternatives are here

People who eat vegan or avoid animal products for sustainability reasons previously had to do without fish and seafood. But “the new Planteneers product closes that gap – it’s a real breakthrough, as Dr. Dorotea Pein, Head of Product Management of our subsidiary Planteneers, says. “The development of seafood alternatives gives vegans and flexitarians a way to put more variety on the menu.”

Trade attendees at Plant Based World Expo North America in December were enthusiastic. The new products can be made individually, and their shape and colour are in every way the equal of the originals. For example, a colour mix based on paprika extract gives shrimp the desired light pink. These products are also very suitable for deep-frozen foods.

Standard meat industry machines can be used to make the products. This has been tested and confirmed with the industry’s leading machine makers – nothing stands in the way of production.

Planteneers offers further innovations, in the form of plant-based alternatives to breaded fish, filets in sushi quality, canned tuna and smoked salmon.
